How to tell if a remote job is fake

We do everything we can to ensure the quality of jobs on Himalayas, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't be careful. Use the checks below to spot red flags and verify opportunities before you share personal information or spend time interviewing.

Red flags to look out for

  • Job descriptions that don’t match the company profile or that provide very limited information about responsibilities, requirements, or the company itself.

  • You’re asked to pay money (for training, equipment, certifications) or front costs with the promise of reimbursement.

  • Unsolicited outreach offering easy, high-pay work or vague roles, often via SMS/WhatsApp/Telegram.

  • Interviews conducted only in messaging apps, with no video call, company email, or calendar invite.

  • Tasks that sound like clicking/liking/rating to earn income (“optimize engagement,” “boost listings”).

  • Requests for sensitive data (full DOB, bank login, crypto wallet keys) early in the process, or pressure to move fast.

  • Fake checks / overpayment schemes where you’re asked to deposit a check and buy equipment or send funds.

  • Email domains that don’t match the company website (e.g., [email protected] for a Fortune-500). Scammers frequently impersonate well-known brands.

  • The job doesn't have a formal interview process and offers are made quickly.

If you suspect a listing

  • Stop engaging and don’t send money or documents.

  • Report it to us (include screenshots, email headers, and URLs).
